Looking for information on the GIBBS family of Grenada, MS. 1830's
- 1890's. My GGGG Grandfather was a Grenada business man named John Gibbs
1793-1879. His wife was named Margret M. 1792-1865. Also My GGG Grandfather
Julius Gause Gibbs 1827-1896, and his wife Mary Temperance Pulliam 1831-1909.
It seems that John Gibbs and later his son Julius Gibbs owned a small resort
a few miles west of town known as Gibbs Springs. Many travelers came to
spend a few days at the small resort to bathe in the waters of Gibbs springs.
The resort was especially popular during the Yellow Fever Outbreak in the
late 1870's as many believed the waters of the spring has medical benifits.
I also understand the Gibbs family bottled the water and sold it as well.
The Spring has since dried up. My GGGG Grandfather John Gibbs was a leading
methodist in the area and helped purchase the land the First Methodist
Church now sits on downtown. He was in the warehouse business of some type
as I have found records of his purchase of warehouse property, He built
a large home on the present day corner of MLK & Govan Streets the family
named "Shannon Grove" and lived these until his death. Some locals told
me that old house was torn down in the 1930's. My GGG Grandfather Julius
Gibbs served as a Captain in the 30th Mississippi Infantry C.S.A. during
the civil war. After the war he was proprietor of the Gibbs Springs resort
and lived in a home on the same land (a few miles west of town) known as
"The Old Rebel Home". When the two fueding cities came together to form
Grenada, Julius Gibbs was asked to survey the land and he is recorded as
having done so. He also served on the first Grandjury after Grenada Co.,
was formed from Yalabusha Co. He was a life long member of the Methodist
church and a lifelong Mason belonging to the Oxford Miss Masonic Lodge
#33 unitl his death iin 1896. He and his wife Mary Pulliam had eleven children.
All of the dates, names etc. on this family of Gibbs in Grenada can be
found on my genealogy web page at: www.texramp.net/~whurley/Gibbs.htm Would
love to share and swap information with anyone who can help me in this
GIBBS family work. Mike Hurley, whurley@texramp.net">

John Moore arrived in what is now Grenada County in the 1830 time
period. An architect, he constructed his own home (known now as the Powell
House) on Margin Street; and the Lake House a bit further down the street.
He arrived in Grenada in a pilgrimage with his wife - Mary Frances Jones;
his brothers; his father and mother in law - John Gooch Jones and wife
Susan LaFaver Farley; and Boushe family members who we think are cousins,
travelling we believe from Notaway County, VA. Most are now buried in the
Odd Fellow's Cemetery and the old Negro cemetery located adjacent to the
Confederate burial site. We are searching for John Moore's lineage as well
as John Gooch Jones', and Susan LaFaver Farley. Would appreciate any info
available. UTTom@aol.com.

My great-grandfather, John Calhoun WHITE, born 2 April 1858, supposedly
came from Grenada [town(?) or county(?)] "soon after the yellow fever epidemic

Copiah Co., MS from 1880 until his death in 1929. The only connection that
I have been able to find, in relation to Grenada, is a deed of trust between
John WHITE and a couple named John T. and Mary Ann ARNDALE. John C. White
